Mind the gap
I must preface this by saying that I’m about to make MASSIVE generalizations.
Certainly what I’m about to say does not represent what is true for every GenY/Millenial. I'm Gen X (though I'm admittedly Y-curious) and I must say, I was in many ways raised like the Millenials I'm about to describe - mom’s #1 job was my sister and I, and I was undoubtedly coddled.
But ...

Where's the snow!?
We're just around the corner from Christmas, and we haven't had a meaningful snowfall yet here in Traverse City.
I can remember years ago having the snow melt off just before the holidays, but really can't recall any year when we never had snow at all.
Snow is a big part of our economy in our northern market, so there are plenty of business owners anxiously watching the forecast.
On the bright ...

What our recent additions are sayingWe recently asked some of the agents from offices who have recently joined us to reflect on the new partnership with Coldwell Banker Schmidt Realtors. The responses truly made me smile! We think just as highly of these agents!
From David Beek, Boyne City

High praise from Houghton/Higgins!There is nothing more energizing for an organization than having great people on board. We're truly lucky to have added some great people recently in the Houghton/Higgins Lake area. Here's what they're saying:
I have been a broker/owner with the ERA franchise since 1991. Many good years with ERA, however when my franchise was due for renewal this year, I decided it was time to look ...

Snow is back (with a vengeance)- time to ski!
The great New Years melt-off of 2010/11 has come and gone, and now we're back to a winter wonderland. It's cold but beautiful, and great for winter fun.
Downhill skiing has been great at Crystal Mountain Resort. I was out last Sunday, which was the first cold day after the thaw, and the conditions were remarkably good- major kudos to the snowmaking and grooming crew. The downhill ...

Getting BusyMy to do list seems to be filling up at the same rate that I empty it. That sounds like a complaint, but it’s more a statement of disbelief. Sure, a lot of this is self inflicted, and isn’t directly tied to today’s transactions, but rather to ancillary activities that I plunge into. But there is a substantial amount of it that IS tied to today’s transactions.
I ...

It pays to brave the elementsWednesday was a cold, icy, nasty day. Like 15 degrees and 15 mph winds, yielding sub-zero wind chills. And I had several hilltop properties to look out. Since the next day was supposed to be even colder, I added some layers and headed out into the elements. The first parcel sits on a north facing ridge, overlooking Long Lake, and when the snow isn’t flying, Sleeping ...

Why I support the extension and expansion of the Home Buyer Tax Credit
First, this is a tax credit, not a cash payment. It's unlike a bailout to a bank, or even Cash for Clunkers where we as citizens wrote checks to take serviceable vehicles off the road. By taking part, buyers are keeping tax dollars out of Treasury hands, and I like that. A small distinction, I know, as the money will be made up somewhere.
Second, it's estimated the median home sale generates ...

September Sales Show Recovery in Northwest Michigan
September proved to show a long anticipated increase in real estate activity in Northwest Michigan. Buyer activity has been trending upward after a lackluster summer season, and we're driving into the fall with a lot of offers being written and properties being put under contract.
The number of residential sales for September we up 31% over 2008- actually they were the best they've been in the past ...

Betsie River ResortFall brings fish into the rivers of Northwest Michigan, first Coho and Chinook Salmon, and later Steelhead. Enthusiasts travel long distances to enjoy the action and the beauty of the region. One of my clients is a river guide, and had a group coming in from North Carolina last weekend.
One of the best know locations among fisherman and tourists alike is the old Homestead Dam site on the Betsie River, ...

Take Advantage of Market Mirco TrendsI handle REO (foreclosure) listings for several banks, including Bank of America and local banks, and the number of new listings incoming have dropped off dramatically recently. In conversation with others who handle these properties, and with local banks, this dip was often echoed. It's likely that a foreclosure moratorium in place over the winter has delayed some properties coming ...

"Cash for Clunkers"The passing of the $4500 "Cash for Clunkers" tax credit out of the House got me thinking. First, let's not fool ourselves into thinking that this is serious efficiency legislation- yes, it puts an incentive on deciding upon a fuel efficient vehicle, and that's certainly more palatable than forcing higher efficiencies and limiting consumer choice. But this is about getting auto sales moving more than ...

Spring has Sprung! It's been a darn good week here in Benzie County. The sun finally found its way back to our little corner of the world and warmed things up some. Most of the golf courses are now open (I even got out to play once!) and most of the snow is gone. I've also heard that the steelhead fishing is great- Betty from Vacation Trailer Park on the Betsie River tipped me off this when ...

What can I get for...This UnReal Deal isn't about a particular property. Rather, it's about what you can get for your money. I was playing around with some numbers the other day, and in doing so found that I'd illustrated to myself some of the reasons it makes sense to consider buying now.
What got me thinking was a conversation with the renter of one of the homes I'm selling, who is looking for a new rental ...
